Zines are little folded up pieces of paper that form of booklet. Besides making pop-ups, which I have been doing since I was in Middle School, zines are the creative outlet that I've been doing the longest.
My first encounter with a zine was in my 10th grade engish class. I went to a high school in Miami that was 2% white, and a lot of the population were Cuban refugee kids who just got off the boat after their families fleed Cuba. A lot of these kids would lean into punk culture, and within weeks of moving, they would all hang out in the "B wing" of our school wearing Jnco jeans, Hot Topic t-shirts, chain wallets wall blasting System of a Down
One of these kids in my class, who was a bit of a bully, and a snob, showed me his punk zine he just made. I Don't remember a lot of it, and I didn't have a lot of time to metabolize what was on the inside before he greedily snatched it back, But I do remember reading a snippet that trashed the punk band Anti-Flag, and readily going along withwith that opinion even though I never heard the band before (they were right)
I went to very substantard schools growing up. I wanted to be
